My truck is a crane truck, has this control under the dash, how do I know if mine is bad? Randomly it won't accelerate down the road 30 miles an hour top and then at times it works perfectly. Crane side works ok.My guess is this module is bad.Your thoughts? Thanks for your help.
If a TPS is going bad, it can cause various symptoms, including:
Check Engine Light (CEL): Often, a failing TPS will trigger the check engine light to illuminate on the dashboard. You can use an OBD-II scanner to retrieve diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) associated with the TPS.
Irregular Idle: A malfunctioning TPS can cause erratic idling, where the engine speed fluctuates unexpectedly or idles too high or too low.
Stalling or Hesitation: As the TPS provides input to the ECU for fuel delivery, a faulty sensor may result in stalling, hesitation, or stumbling upon acceleration.
Poor Performance: A bad TPS can lead to poor engine performance, including sluggish acceleration and reduced power output.
Transmission Shifting Issues: In vehicles with automatic transmissions, a failing TPS can cause erratic shifting patterns or harsh shifting.
Surging: Sometimes, you may experience surging or jerking sensations while driving at a steady speed, which can be attributed to irregular throttle response due to a faulty TPS.
Lack of Response: If you notice that pressing the accelerator pedal doesn't result in a corresponding increase in engine speed or response, the TPS could be malfunctioning.
Resistance or Dead Spots: A TPS may develop electrical problems over time, leading to resistance or dead spots in its output signal. This can cause inconsistent throttle response or even a complete lack of response.
If you suspect that your throttle position sensor is failing based on these symptoms, it's advisable to have it diagnosed and replaced by a qualified mechanic or technician. They can use diagnostic tools to test the TPS and confirm whether it's functioning properly. Additionally, if your vehicle is equipped with advanced diagnostic systems, such as live data monitoring through a scan tool, you can observe the TPS signal while operating the throttle to detect any irregularities.
